Weather & Seasons
What is the weather like on Mahé and what should I expect?
The weather on Mahé is classically tropical, with temperatures consistently ranging between **24°C and 32°C (75°F to 90°F)** throughout the year. Because Mahé is a mountainous island, weather can vary significantly from one side of the island to the other. While it might be raining in the lush hills of **Morne Seychellois National Park**, you could find perfectly clear skies just ten minutes away at **Beau Vallon** beach or the northern tip of the island.
To understand Mahé's weather patterns, you must look at the two primary seasons driven by trade winds:
* **Northwest Monsoon (November to March):** This period is characterized by higher humidity and more frequent rainfall, often in short, heavy bursts known locally as "liquid sunshine." December and January are typically the wettest months. The seas are generally calmest on the northern and western coasts during this time, making places like **Anse Major** or **Port Launay** ideal for swimming. * **Southeast Trade Winds (May to September):** This is the "cooler" and drier season. The winds pick up, providing a welcome breeze that lowers the perceived humidity. However, the southeast coast, including areas like **Fairyland, Anse Royale, and Anse Parnel**, becomes much windier with choppier seas and occasional seaweed wash-up. * **Transitional Months (April and October):** These are often considered the best times to visit. The winds die down, the sea becomes glass-like, and underwater visibility for snorkeling and diving is at its peak.
If you are staying near **Fairyland** or **Anse Royale**, be aware that between June and September, the wind hits this coast directly. While this keeps you cool and keeps mosquitoes at bay, the sea may not be ideal for casual swimming compared to the sheltered bays on the west coast. During the rainier months, it is wise to invest in a sturdy umbrella or a light poncho, which you can find at local "man-ze-peu" shops or the STC supermarket in Victoria for approximately **SCR 250-450**.
**Local Pro Tip:** Always check the mountain peaks above Victoria. If the clouds are "sitting" low on the granite ridges, rain is likely to follow on the coast shortly. However, don't let a rainy forecast discourage you; tropical showers on Mahé are usually localized and brief. If it is pouring on the east coast, hop in a rental car or take an SPTC bus (which costs **SCR 12 per trip** with a travel card) to the opposite side of the island. More often than not, you will find blue skies just a few kilometers away.
When planning your daily activities, remember that the sun is extremely strong due to the proximity to the equator. Even on overcast days, UV levels remain high. A high-quality reef-safe sunscreen in a local pharmacy will cost around **SCR 350-500**. Always combine your weather checks with a look at the tide charts, as many of Mahé’s best beaches are best enjoyed at mid-tide to avoid either exposed rocks or disappearing sand. For the most accurate "live" feel, many locals use the Seychelles Meteorological Authority website or look at the live webcams hosted by some of the larger resorts in **Beau Vallon**.
